Matt O’Brian

Matt O’Brian, sits on the Board of Directors for Taku Group of Companies, elected in 2023. Matt O’Brien is the Owner and Accountable Executive of Discovery Helicopters Ltd. Since taking over operation in 2019 Matt, along with his business partner and wife, Heather O’Brien, has grown the company to a year-round, thriving addition to Atlin’s economy. Developing healthy working relationships with the residents of Atlin and Taku River Tlingit First Nation, as well as other provincial and federal governments has been a top priority while growing the business in a safe and sustainable manner. 

Matt oversees all areas of operations, including building a safety conscious, efficient and customer service-oriented team, managing all financial aspects of the company and monitoring and controlling the safe operation and maintenance of all the equipment. Prior to Discovery Helicopters, Matt was the Manager of Yukon Energy Corporation’s transmission and distribution lines throughout the Yukon. Matt managed the capital and operations budgets for his department while supervising contracted and internal crews to meet project deadlines and budgets. Matt provided training, technical advice and direction to tradespersons and operational staff in the construction and maintenance of electrical, transmission and distribution systems. Matt’s experience gives him an in depth understanding of the unique challenges of providing power to the North.

Matt’s parents built a home on the Warm Bay road in the 70’s where they lived until he was four years old. In 1983 the family moved to Whitehorse and Matt spent the remainder of his childhood there. Matt and Heather met in 2000 and together they are raising their four children between Whitehorse and Atlin. Matt is passionate about creating opportunities for his children and future generations to thrive in the North.  Matt is the Operations Manager and Pilot at Discovery Helicopters Ltd.
